The Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University is a law school in Chennai, India. Named after Dr. B. R. Ambedkar, a Indian legal specialist of the 20th century, the university offers specializations at undergraduate and postgraduate level.

Dr. Surjit Singh Barnala, the Governor of Tamil Nadu, is the Chancellor and Dr.V.Vijyakumar is the Vice-Chancellor. The institution was established by the 1996 state Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University Act,1996 with the National Law School of India University as its model as the first Indian legal education institution. Apart from the teaching and academic research initiatives, the university has state-sponsored and private law colleges as affiliates, differing from the other law schools in the country. Although applicants from all over the country are encouraged, most students are from Tamil Nadu.

Courses

The School of Excellence in Law was established to focus on undergraduate education. At the postgraduate level, the university offers advanced degrees through its Departments of Law. The advanced degree programs offered include Business Law, Constitutional Law and Human Rights, Intellectual Property Laws, International Law and Organizations, Environmental Law and Legal Order, and Criminal Law and Criminal Justice Administration.

The university has initiatives with institutions around the world. The university conducts examinations in branches of law, and awards degrees and diplomas recognized by the government of India and many other countries.
